Position Overview
Our client is looking for an experienced Chief Inspector to take ownership of its fixed-equipment Mechanical Integrity and inspection program.
This is a senior, hands-on technical role for someone who knows tanks, piping and pressure equipment and wants the authority to help drive how an operating facility manages inspection, corrosion, equipment integrity and risk.
You will serve as the technical authority for fixed-equipment inspection, working directly with Maintenance, Reliability, Operations, Engineering, Projects and Safety to ensure critical assets remain safe, reliable and compliant.
Key Responsibilities
- Own and continuously improve the fixed-equipment Mechanical Integrity inspection program.
- Develop and maintain inspection plans for tanks, piping, pressure vessels and associated fixed equipment.
- Establish inspection intervals, CML/TML programs, inspection methods and acceptance criteria.
- Monitor corrosion rates, thickness data, remaining life and equipment approaching integrity limits.
- Identify credible damage mechanisms and ensure appropriate inspection and NDE techniques are being used.
- Review inspection findings and ensure corrective actions are prioritized and completed.
- Manage atmospheric storage tank inspection requirements in accordance with API 653.
- Oversee piping inspection programs and corrosion monitoring in accordance with API 570.
- Govern pressure vessel and pressure-equipment inspection requirements under API 510.
- Coordinate Fitness-for-Service evaluations under API 579-1/ASME FFS-1 when required.
- Maintain oversight of temporary repairs, engineering evaluations and inspection extensions.
- Participate in Management of Change reviews involving equipment integrity.
- Support tank outages, turnarounds, major repairs, piping modifications and capital projects.
- Provide technical oversight of third-party inspectors and NDE contractors.
- Support Root Cause Analysis following significant corrosion, equipment failures or loss-of-containment events.
- Conduct regular field walkdowns to verify equipment condition and identify emerging integrity concerns.
- Provide leadership with clear reporting on inspection compliance, corrosion trends, high-risk findings and overall equipment integrity.
Qualifications
- 7–10+ years of fixed-equipment inspection, Mechanical Integrity or asset integrity experience within refinery, petrochemical, chemical, terminal, pipeline or another heavy industrial environment.
- Strong working knowledge of API 510, API 570 and API 653.
- Working knowledge of applicable ASME, OSHA PSM and RAGAGEP requirements.
- Hands-on experience with atmospheric storage tanks, process piping, pressure vessels, CML/TML programs, corrosion monitoring, thickness data, remaining-life calculations, inspection planning, repairs, alterations and NDE activities.
- Experience coordinating Fitness-for-Service evaluations and integrity-related outage scopes.
- Experience with CMMS and/or inspection data-management systems.
- Ability to clearly communicate equipment condition and integrity risk to technical teams and leadership.
- Strong technical judgment and the confidence to challenge questionable inspection data, abnormal corrosion, repeated repairs or unsupported assumptions about continued equipment service.
- Bachelor's degree in Mechanical, Materials, Corrosion, Welding or a related engineering discipline preferred. Equivalent technical education, inspection certifications and significant fixed-equipment experience will also be considered.
- Preferred certifications: API 510, API 570 and API 653.
- API 580, API 571, API 577, NDE certifications, or AMPP/NACE corrosion and coating credentials are a plus.
